Post Claiming online casino winnings on income tax?
I'm not necessarily comfortable talking about income tax as related to online casino winnings but I figured that I needed some advice and what better place then here on Casino Advisor. I've been lurking around the site and message board for some time now but this is my first post as I've just registered as I really wanted to try the free games offered here on the site that look really great.

Back to my question though. I currently play at a number of online casinos and recently I've been winning more then I've been putting in... I know rare, haha... Anyhow I haven't been planning on paying any income tax on the winnings that I've generated over the past year on my annual tax return.

I don't think that it's very likely that the IRS has access to the banking statements of some of the eWallet banking options that I use to keep the money so my question is really do you guys think that they would by some chance actually have access to this information. If you haven't noticed I'm from America and as you know we have a fairly thorough tax department. Again though I feel as though they wouldn't be able to find this money as it's located offshore in some bank account in Germany through the eWallet that I use.

Advice or comments would be appreciated!

I would advise against defrauding the IRS even if it's not for very much money. You never really know when these things can come back around and bite you in the behind! It's best to be straight forward with it even if you have the money offshore or in an eWallet bank account they likely still have ways of finding out. I know that with systems like Paypal where they do report directly to the IRS you'd have problems getting away with what you describe. These other systems though may go unnoticed but still there is that chance and it's not worth going to jail or big fines if you ask me.

In the end you know this is how they captured Capone right :P :P

I don't claim any of my winnings for tax purposes and I think it would be silly if you do. Most of us players put back our winnings into the casino anyway over time so it's not that big of a deal if you keep this money aside and just use it for playing with. If however you were to transfer funds from your eWallet account to your personal bank account in the US either via check or wire transfer then I'd be a bit more skeptical and worried for you.

Cheers!

I agree with Danny on this matter this is in fact how they captured Capone, lol... as he had mentioned.

Playing around with the tax man is not advised and if you win lots of money and plan on using it in the United States I'd be very skeptical if I were you as it could certainly result to and lead to some issues for you in the future that you might not think about at this time.

Regards!
