In January 2009 Real Time Gaming (RTG) had launched an online slot game to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Since this year was the Year of the Ox, the online slot was called Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness. The slot game was visually rich with a number of features targeted to appeal to a Chinese audience. Now, barely eight months later RTG has launched a near identical slot called Year Of Fortune. The similarities between the two online slots are many. But there are marked differences as well. There are many common symbols on the reels. The Ox is the wild symbol and The Year of the Ox logo is the scatter symbol in both cases. The other common symbols are Masked Dancer, Lantern, Firecracker and 8. The exact graphics differ but only slightly. In Year Of Fortune the Ox does not offer any payouts but acts as a multiplier. In the older Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness the Ox was the symbol for the progressive jackpot but was not a multiplier. The animation in the Ox symbols in both slot games is very similar. The scatter symbol triggers 8 free spins in both slot games, but the free spins are played out differently. In Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness the free spins are automatically tripled. In Year Of Fortune each Ox symbol appearing in winning combinations doubles the payouts. Also in the later game 88 paylines are enabled in free spins which increases the chances of payouts. Another advantage of Year Of Fortune free spins is that the progressive jackpot can be hit during free spins, whereas in Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness it cannot. In both slots the free spins can be retriggered. One feature present in Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness is missing in Year Of Fortune. This is the Re-Spins feature. The two reels in which the Ox symbol appears are kept fixed and the other reels are spun eight times. The multiplier keeps on increasing by one each time. The payout tables in both online slots have a plethora of 8s. The Chinese consider that 8 is a lucky number. The highest fixed jackpot payout in both slots is 8888 coins. Both slots have payouts like 2888, 888 and 288. However the slot parameters differ. Happy Golden Ox Of Happiness is a 50 payline slot, whereas Year Of Fortune is a 25 payline slot. I've checked out both of these games and there are quite a bit of differences between the bonus rounds. The reel layouts must change in the free spins in the Year of Fortune as the number of paylines in the game changes. I think Year of Fortune is actually a much more interesting game. Although the themes are very similar as are the graphics in this game I still thing the bonus rounds are different enough that it made sense for them to do both of these games. These slots are virtually the same I've played them both. It just goes to show that some online casino software providers develop slots games that are very similar to old games they've done simply to increase the size of their games library and not really to innovate or bring forth anything new or interesting.
