Online casino software providers like to combine two different game genres into a single product. The player gets double value for money, something different from the usual fare and a bit of excitement as well. Pinball Roulette from Playtech is a cross between pinball and roulette. Area 21 from Cryptologic combines video slots with blackjack. The leading software provider WagerWorks has its own hybrid online casino game - 21 + 3 Blackjack.

‘21’ is a common alternate name for blackjack. The ‘3’ refers to three card poker. The introduction to the game informs that 21 + 3 was invented by Derek Webb, the creator of the original Three Card Poker game. The main game is the blackjack game and this must be initiated by placing the blackjack ante bet. Subsequently the player has the option to place the 3 card poker side bet. In WagerWorks 21 + 3 Blackjack the player cannot wager only on the 3 card poker game. The table limits are minimum 1 credit and maximum 1,000 credits and these apply independently to both bets.

The blackjack game is played in the usual manner. It is based on European Blackjack. Therefore no hole card is dealt for the dealer and the dealer cannot check for blackjack upfront. Therefore players need to be careful in placing the additional wagers for the split and double down moves when the dealer’s face up card is an ace or a ten value card. The detailed rules can be read by moving the cursor over the ‘Pay Table and Bet Limits’ icon. Players at WagerWorks online casinos should go through these rules before they start wagering. The salient rules are as follows. Players can double down on any two cards. One re-split is allowed. Double down after a split is allowed. Players can hit, double down and re-split on split aces. The dealer has to draw on 16 and stand on all 17s. WagerWorks 21 + 3 Blackjack is played with six standard decks. The usual blackjack payouts apply. Blackjack pays 3 to 2. Wins pay 1 to 1. Ties push. Insurance bet pays 2 to 1. The rules are very liberal and result in an average return to the player of 99.7%.

No special poker skill is required to play the 3 card poker part of the game. The player has to place the poker side bet. The two cards dealt to the player and the dealer’s face-up card constitute the three card poker hand. If this hand matches one of the rankings in the payout table then the corresponding payout is made. The payouts are as follows. Flush pays 5 to 1. Straight pays 10 to 1. Three of a kind pays 33 to 1. Straight flush pays 35 to 1. Suited three of a kind pays 100 to 1.

The method of play on the screen is as follows. After the bets are placed the player should click the DEAL button. The REBET AND DEAL button repeats the last bet and starts the play immediately in one click. The REBET button repeats the last bet without initiating a new game. The game will have to be initiated by clicking the DEAL button again. The TURBO button quickens the pace of play by eliminating card dealing animations. It is often used by expert players.
