The Top Blackjack Tips for Recreational PlayersBy: Mark Freedman, Thursday October 9th 20140 Comments Email Print The game of blackjack is known for being particularly difficult to learn to play at a high level because of the intense level of strategy that's involved. However, instead of trying to learn a mathematically-perfect strategy that's dull and boring, you can learn a set of general tips and concepts that will help you to play well most of the time in most situations without ever really making that many big mistakes. This is the approach we advocate for recreational players who don't have the time to spend studying for hours each week, and we're going to give you some tips that will help you with your game along these lines. The first tip that we have for you is that you need to learn what the weak and strong dealer cards are. The weak dealers cards are six and lower, and when the dealer has these cards, he's much more likely to bust out. This means you have to be more conservative when playing hard totals 12 and up since hitting and busting could be a disaster if the dealer would have busted too, but it also means you can be more aggressive with doubling soft hands when facing these cards as well. As far as strong dealer cards go, you have to be careful about what happens in terms of how you play because strong dealer cards are less likely to bust and more likely to make strong totals. Along these lines, you need to be more aggressive with hitting to try to compete and get better strong players. Overall, this is the main thing that you need to play some of the hardest situations out there since the only real strategic option you have is to try to get a strong hand by hitting even if you're going to bust sometimes. Aside from that, there's a major tip that players should take about surrendering. A lot of recreational players like the idea of escaping a tough situation for only half of their bet. The problem is that the vast majority of these players drastically over-use the surrender option, so we have a quick way to tell if you should use it or not. If you're facing a ten or an ace and you have a hard 16, then feel free to surrender. Otherwise, do not surrender under any circumstances.
