On the occasion of the New Year Eve of 2010 Rival Gaming released a new slot game called Reel Party Platinum. Actually it was a makeover of an existing video slot Reel Party. Makeovers of online slots are not unheard of, but the Reel Party makeover is a classic case study in how such makeovers should be carried out. It has struck the right balance in offering something new and retaining the brand equity of the old slot.

The makeover begins with the introductory clip. The flat 2D fireworks animations are replaced by a 3D clip that takes players to a neon-lit square where the party takes place. This remains as the backdrop to the reels. In Reel Party Platinum the background of the symbols are transparent and therefore the party zone backdrop is visible as the reels spin.

The graphical sophistication continues in the crafting of the symbols in Reel Party Platinum. But the symbols bear a one to one correspondence with those in the earlier Reel Party, thus preserving the brand equity of that game. The grooming and the dressing of the host and hostess are more in tune with current trends in Reel Party Platinum. The increased sophistication is seen in the other symbols. The glasses of beer have been replaced by a lime cocktail. Glasses of bubbly are being clicked instead of toasting with rum. The starters look more appetizing. Even in the symbols that have been retained as they were the superior graphics are apparent.

Some new animations have been introduced in Reel Party Platinum. When the host or hostess make up winning combinations the party becomes alive in the background of the symbol. Unfortunately some good animations have been left out. In the wild symbol the baby New Year played with a rattle, which is not there in Reel Party Platinum. Also the bonus game on the second screen in Reel Party was announced by the uncorking of champagne bottles. This is missing in Reel Party Platinum. However, the bonus game, though identical in structure, is graphically improved in Reel Party Platinum. The game is played at the liquor cabinet. Stocks of unused glasses have been added to the cabinet and the host and hostess accompany the player.

The betting parameters are identical in both versions. Both are 15 payline slots, with a maximum of 5 coins per line and a coin denomination range from 0.01 to 1.00. The line payouts are also identical. The free spins bonus round offers 10, 20 or 100 free spins in both the games. But in Reel Party Platinum the free spins payouts are tripled.
