The Decline Of Download Online Casino PlatformsBy: Fabian Rictor, Wednesday October 18th 20170 Comments Email Print Are download casinos becoming obsolete? The answer is “yes”. In fact there will be online casino players that have just entered into this activity who do not know what download casinos are. Before we look at the reasons for the decline of download casino platforms, we provide a brief explanation of how they operated. When online gaming was developed around 1995, it was on download platforms. The player had to access the online casino web site and download the software package from there. The software had to be installed on the player’s computer. The online casino games included in the package would then be downloaded and stored along with the software. As the software provider released new games the file size on the player’s computer would go on increasing and consume more storage. Eventually this started becoming a problem, especially for players who wagered at several online casinos. But, there was another more critical problem as well. Download online casino platforms were compatible with only Windows operating system. This excluded users of other operating systems, notably Mac, from engaging in online casino gambling. Rather than develop different platforms for different operating systems, online casino software providers went for a common platform. This was how the instant play online casino platform came into existence. Players did not have to download the software. They could select the games from the online casino web site and open them in their browsers. The games were stored in the servers of the online casino software provider and did not affect the storage capacity on the player’s computer. However, the data transfer between the server and the player’s computer increased many fold. In the initial stages of instant play online casino platforms, the Internet connections for the majority of the people were not fast enough to take this load. So, they were reliability issues and the game play was often not smooth. Also, the game portfolio size on the instant play platforms was much smaller. Online casinos offered both download and instant play platforms and let the player choose the one best suited to their needs. Over time the quality of instant play platforms increased substantially as did the speed of Internet connections. Software providers also built up the titles on their instant play platforms. The biggest boost came when instant play platforms could be integrated with the servers of multiple software providers. This allowed players to wager on games from different software providers at the same online casino. Because of all these factors the download platform has become obsolete. Some of the older players may still be using the remaining download platforms, but all the new traffic is on instant play.
