Single Deuce Situations in Deuces Wild Video Poker

The most common scenario that you'll run into in Deuces Wild video poker is having no wilds in your hand. A lot of people focus on these hands for the vast majority of their study because it's the best thing to study when you first start out. However, most people completely neglect to learn how to play when you have a single deuces in your hand. These types of situations are also important to learn because they are the second most likely to occur in the game. They are also important to work on because sometimes they are anti-intuitive and do not function just like the non-wild hands.

The top part of the hands play in similar ways. You should never break hands that are a full house or higher. However, you can break a flush or straight for two different types of draws when you have a wild in your hand. If you have four cards to a royal, including a wild, then you can go ahead and break it. This is different than non-wild spots because natural royal flushes pay out a lot more. However, you can do the same thing with a single wild in your hand.

You can also break made flushes and straights with four cards to a straight flush as long as your three non-wild cards for the draw are consecutive. For example, suppose you hold A8762 for a made flush. You should actually discard the ace and go with the four-card straight flush draw because the 876 cluster are all consecutive. If there are any gaps, those hands will actually be worth less than made straights and flushes, and that is a very important lesson to learn. In fact, if you understand this bit, you'll be able to play intuitively for the rest of the possible single-wild card situations in this game and do really well.

At the bottom end of the scenario, three of a kind is better than four to a straight flush with gaps, and that draw is better than three to a royal. Three to a royal is also better than three to a straight flush with two consecutive straight flush cards. Without that, you should actually just discard your entire hand except for the wild card and hope for the best. If you follow these guideliness, you'll be playing very close to mathematically perfect in this game.
