Setting Targets for Slots Tournaments

Online slots tournaments are usually of the leader board type. This means that the designated number of highest scorers share the prize pool in a predetermined manner. Most players usually play their turn in slots tournaments as late as possible after the leader board has crystallized to some extent. This enables them to play with a target in mind and hence they can determine the aggressiveness with which they should wager.

There are certain issues related to picking a target that new online slots tournament players should understand. A number of players share the prize pool and therefore it is not necessary to have the highest score in order to be in the cash. Suppose that twenty players are sharing the prize pool in a given slots tournament. At the time a player wants to enter the highest score is say $25,000 and the 20th player has a score of $2,000. The first thing to bear in mind is that the player will not get these amounts. These only determine the leader board position. It could be that the 1st player wins $10,000 and the 20th player wins $50. The question before the player entering the slots tournament is whether he should chase a target of $25,000 or a target of $2,000.

In a once play slots tournament the decision making is simpler. In these tournaments the player pays the entry fee and gets one attempt only. Whatever score he has at the end of the allotted time is the final score. Here the decision is based on the risk averseness of the player. If the player is conservative then he should try to just break in to the prize pool and target a score of just over $2,000. He stands to win $50, or slightly more, but is more likely to win than if he sets a higher target. However, the more aggressive player, who is not interested in a small share of the prize pool, should set his sights on more than $20,000. He should do so with full realization that it is very likely that he could bust in the process and not win anything.

In rebuy slots tournaments the decision making is more complex. Because players rebuy a number of times the scores required to break into the prize pool can be quite high. Players have to factor in a number of rebuys and hence their investment will be more than the smaller prizes offered in the tournament. Therefore it makes no sense to have smaller targets because that would be a losing proposition to begin with. Players have to fix their investment based on a proposed number of rebuys and set a target that offers them a prize greater than that investment.

Another thing that slots tournament players must keep in mind is that the leader board is not static. The highest scores will keep increasing as the tournament progresses and therefore players have to add a buffer to the existing highest scores to provide for the increase. The scores increase very rapidly in the beginning and only marginally towards the end. It is a good idea to track the leader board on a daily basis and wait till the rate of increase has become marginal before entering the tournament. That way only a small buffer will be needed to the present scores.
