It must be said upfront that there is no bet or betting strategy that can beat the house edge in roulette. That does not mean that a player cannot win. Some players will win and others will lose, but this is determined by chance and not by any system.
Despite this certain bets are more popular than others. Like sportsmen gamblers are superstitious people. Some sportsmen carry lucky charms. They win on their ability but still find comfort in their lucky handkerchief or coin. Likewise roulette players win if they have been lucky on that day but they still wager on their favorite betting patterns.
In land casinos the number called is generated by the ball landing on a particular slot. Some roulette players believe that some numbers in sequence on the wheel are called more often than others because of deformities in the wheel mechanism. While this is not true it has led to a set of bets that are not based on the roulette layout but on sequences of numbers on the wheel. These bets are referred to as "called bets". In European Roulette there are three such bets. "Neighbors of Zero" covers the 17 numbers between 22 and 25 on the wheel. "Third of Cylinder" covers the 12 numbers that lie between 27 and 33. "Orphans" covers the remaining 8 numbers. Since online roulette uses a random number generator to call the numbers and not a mechanical wheel these bets are generally not offered in online roulette. However some online casinos that offer French Roulette (a variant of European Roulette) and live roulette offer these bets.
American Roulette has a bet called "Five Number Bet". It covers the first five numbers on the roulette layout, which are 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This bet has become popular despite having a higher house edge. But player are advised to use this bet sparingly and only when feeling lucky.
There is a pattern of betting known as the "1st and 3rd column strategy". It will not result in winning more but only in winning more often because the betting pattern covers all but five numbers. One chip is wagered on the 1st column, one chip is wagered on the 3rd column and one chip is wagered on black numbers. This pattern leaves out the 0 (and 00 in American Roulette) and the four red numbers in the middle column. If a red number in either the 1st or 3rd column is called then the player ends quits. If an uncovered number is called then the player loses his entire wager. If a black number in the middle column is called the player loses one chip. If a black number in the 1st or 3rd column is called then the player wins 2 chips. |
