Playing Paired Hands in Deuces Wild Video PokerBy: Ryan Alders, Wednesday August 14th 20130 Comments Email Print Deuces Wild is the most basic wild card game in all of video poker, and it's also one of the most popular video poker titles overall. When you study strategy for this game, it will help you in all types of wild card games, and that's why it's such an important game to work on for video poker players. There are a lot of complications in this game, and a lot of the most confusing situations that come up have to do with basic single pair, two pair and three of a kind hands. A lot of people who are not familiar with wild card payout tables blow these hands over and over again, so here we're going to show you how to play these spots correctly. Let's start out with a basic understanding of the lower end of the Deuces Wild video poker paytable. In non-wild card games, the lowest hand that pays out a prize is usually a single pair hand of some sort. In Jacks or Better, for example, this creates a situation where a pair of jacks (or better) is worth a lot more than a single pair of tens or lower. In Deuces Wild, however, there is no payout for a single pair. This means that all pairs are equal in value. When you have a single pair in Deuces Wild with no wild cards available, then you should keep it unless you can draw to at least three to a royal flush or four to a straight flush. A single pair is worth more than a draw to a plain flush or straight, however. With a single wild card in your hand, you should never keep one card with it to make a pair. For example, if you had something like 2 A J 7 4 with no flush draw, a lot of players who are more familiar with Jacks or Better would keep the 2 since it's wild and the A for a pair of aces. However, this is a horrible mistake. Instead, you should draw to just the 2 and discard the other four cards. This is one of the main things that you have to watch out for when you're playing wild card games because of the way the lower end of the payout table works. This is a common mistake that a lot of players make, and correcting it can add several percentage points to your payout rate in this game.
