PC is the Most Popular Base for Online CasinosBy: Joan Peppin, Wednesday December 31st 20081 Comment Email Print When online gambling software was being developed in the early 1990s, P.C. users dominated the personal computing market. Online gambling was heavily dependent on individual users connecting to the Internet. Online gambling also needed a large number of users so as to defray the massive costs of the initial development. Therefore the pioneers of online gambling software, Microgaming and Cryptologic, chose the P.C. platform on which to develop their games. The other online gaming software providers that followed suit also used the P.C. platform. Initially the software that was developed had to be downloaded. And since this was only P.C. compatible the users necessarily had to be P.C. users who used the Windows operating system. Mac and Linux were the other operating systems in use at that time. Since the online casino download software was not compatible with Mac or Linux, the users of these systems were bereft of the online gaming experience. There are some download gaming software that operate on Mac and Linux. However these cannot be compared either in quality or versatility with the software from the best online gaming software providers that include Microgaming, Playtech, Real Time Gaming, Vegas Technology and Cryptologic. Today the share of Mac and Linux users in the personal computing market has increased and is growing. Therefore it is becoming apparent to the online gaming industry that they could be missing out on an emerging demographic segment of the market. Almost all the major online gaming software providers have launched a no download or instant play version of the gaming software. This software need not be installed in the memory of the players’ computers, but is temporarily stored in the browser during the duration of use. This is a boon to frequent casino hoppers who do not want their hard disc to be cluttered up with the software of umpteen online casinos. Some of the online gaming software providers took advantage of this opportunity and developed their no download flash instant play versions to be compatible with Mac as well as P.C. These software providers are Playtech and Vegas Technology. Therefore Mac users can now enjoy the pleasures of online gaming through the no download versions of Playtech and Vegas Technology software. However many experts have stated that the no download versions are not as good as the original download versions. Their biggest disadvantage is that their smaller size necessitates truncation of many of the features available in download versions. There have also been reports of the no download versions being less stable and less secure. Meanwhile Mac and Linux continue to make inroads into the personal computing arena. Therefore it is only a matter of time before the major online gaming software providers come out with a download version compatible with Mac and Linux. I think that as Mac is super popular these days it would be really nice to see an online casino software provider out there release a "good" quality downloadable online casino software client. I think that Rival has one but they're software is less desirable then say one of the bigger software providers. Hopefully someone will come up with something soon as there certainly is a market for it but no one servicing that market as of yet.
