Online Casinos a Hot Topic at Land Based Casino ExpoBy: Joan Peppin, Friday November 26th 20100 Comments Email Print The three day Global Gaming Expo (G2E) that took place last week is an expo that primarily concentrates on land based gambling, and the things that affect land casinos and other forms of land based gambling. This year, however, with the issue of legalizing and regulating online gambling being one of the hottest topics in both the online, and the offline casino worlds, much of the discussion that ensued at the expo was centered around this topic. The attendees at the expo did discuss a number of points connected directly to land based gambling, as did the keynote speakers. However, much of the buzz and discussion naturally centered around online casino gambling. Much of the reason that online gambling has not yet been legalized and regulated in the United States is because of land based gambling concerns. The Las Vegas casinos felt they would lose business to online casinos, and the ailing New York racing tracks did not feel that they could compete with new forms of legalized gambling in their state, and nobody wanted competition for the Atlantic City casinos that have also recently been hit hard by the recession. It is not unique to the gambling world, that some revenue is lost to the world of the Internet. All forms of industry will find that almost anything can now be purchased via the Internet. If this is the case with items such as books, why should it not be the case where land casinos versus online casinos are concerned? The question that land based casinos may need to be asking themselves is how much revenue have they really lost to online casinos. It is fairly clear that a fair amount of players have chosen to place their wagers at online casinos rather than at land based casinos. What is not clear is that if the online casino option were not available, would these same players return to land based casinos? It is most likely that some of them would, however, there are many that would not because they find that a trip to a land based casino can be prohibitively expensive at this time, because of the high costs of travel. Another point to bear in mind is that the revenue made collectively by online casinos is so much more than is made by land based casinos, that perhaps the business that the land casinos feel was 'stolen' from them, may well never have been theirs in the first place, and that online casino operators simply found a new niche in the gambling market.
