Some games at online casinos are designated as multi hand. These are usually some card based table games like blackjack and video poker games. After the player places his wager he can play a number of hands without staking additional ante amounts. This increases the speed of the game play and therefore multi hand games are preferred by players who cannot wager at online casinos at leisure. There are two differences between multi hand table games and multi hand video poker. In multi hand table games players have to execute each hand independently in turn. In multi hand video poker players have to play one hand only and the effect is transferred to the remaining hands. Multi hand table games are restricted to five hands, whereas multi hand video poker games can go up to 100 hands.

Different software providers have presented multi hand video poker games in two formats. Software providers like Microgaming and Playtech have video poker games with different number of hands as separate titles. If players want to switch a different number of hands they would have to open a new game. Software providers like Rival Gaming and Cryptologic allow players to choose the number of hands from within the game. This is more convenient. The numbers of hands usually available are 1, 4, 10, 25, 50 and 100. Not all software providers deliver this complete range in all their video poker variants.

Once the number of hands has been selected the basic game play is same across all software providers. Players select the number of coins to be wagered and the coin size as in single hand video poker games. When players initiate the game five cards are dealt in the large playing area. The cards that are to be held are marked in the usual manner. It is here that the multi hand video poker becomes different from the single hand version. The held cards are then transferred face up to the corresponding positions in all the hands. The remaining cards in the hands remain unexposed till the player clicks the Draw button. Then the face down cards are exposed in sequence. Each hand is independently compared with the payout table and the amounts won, if any, are credited to the players. Most software providers offer a double option, the exact nature of which differs. However, these options are voluntary and allow the player a chance to double the payout won at zero house edge if he so desires. The flip side is that if he exercises the option and fails then he will lose the original payout.

In order to help players keep track of what is happening on the screen, particularly when the number of hands is in excess of 25, the software displays color coded texts across the hands to identify the hand ranking. A break up of the total payout is also provided that gives details of the number of hands for each paying hand ranking. Most software providers offer speed settings in their games. It is advisable that players opt for the fastest speed setting. The main reason for wagering on multi hand video poker games is to play maximum hands in a given time and the fastest speed setting will help fulfill this objective.
