In December of 2007 MGM opened the Grand Macau casino in Macau city in China with a small, but growing land gambling industry. This is the first casino to be opened by a Las Vegas company in Macau. The joint hotel project was 1.25 billion USD in the making. The MGM Mirage and Pansy Ho decided they wanted a piece of the action in the gambling industry.
Pansy Ho is a socialite and daughter of the Casino King Pin, Stanley Ho. The MGM Grand is working to be the largest of the high roller casinos in Macau. China actually topped the 2007 year with more revenue than Las Vegas was able to make. While the casino is still just six months old they have been doing great in the revenue department.
The executives in charge of the casino have been filled with excitement since opening night and hope that opening night and the successive success will continue for years. Terry Lanni is the CEO of MGM Mirage who was able to be at the casino opening. The casino party she attended was in a European style plaza marking the sophistication and style of the new Asian hotel.
There have been several celebrities since opening night to grace the casino along with some very influential individuals of China.
The casino has 600 hotel rooms making it one of the best hotels to grace China in 40 years. A lot of the wealthier gamblers have been staying at the casino since its opening. They also have several VIP customers which have made the high end shopping and entertainment provided by the casino all the better.
Pansy Ho and MGM are already looking for other areas they can expand into with more hotels and casinos. It could be that in a couple of years the Cotai Strip will have an MGM collaboration with a Venetian style. They are already in discussions with the Macau government regarding the property they hold on the strip.
The fact that the hotel has decided to stick with the European architecture and add in some Chinese and art deco has only increased the splendour. Inside the hotel there will be a convention centre, theatre, and circus. It is no surprise that the hotel is 35 stories and has a glass atrium that is 20 feet high. In fact the design was taken from the central train station in Lisbon. They did have to ask for permission from the Portuguese government, but they did get the go ahead.
Since the MGM and Pansy Ho are continuing to work on more projects in the area it is only a matter of time for players to experience yet a new casino. The MGM Grand Macau is already making a name for itself, and will certainly help China reach their goal of surpassing the Las Vegas strip in its entirety in about four years. This projection has a lot of individuals sitting in anticipation for the great things to come.
