GLI and TST Release Online Gaming Standards

Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) is the world's leading gaming test laboratory. Technical Systems Testing (TST) is a GLI company involved in certification of online casinos. GLI and TST have released the industry's first global online gaming regulatory guidelines, which they have termed as GLI-19. GLI President and CEO James Maida said, "This is an important day in the gaming industry. With GLI-19, GLI and TST can now assist new and emerging markets in developing the proper technical controls and regulations to facilitate the markets."

GLI-19 is a technical standard, which was finalized after an extensive review of the major online gambling jurisdictions. The review, which lasted for more than a year, involved in-depth consultation with online gambling regulators, software developers and operators from around the world. Because GLI and TST have a close relationship with all key stakeholders in the industry, they were able to determine best practices and provide a common standard for new jurisdictions according to Phillip Barow, who is the Managing Director of GLI Europe and TST. The advantage of GLI-19 is that it provides common standards for technical regulation that encompasses the best practices in regulated jurisdictions from Europe and Canada. Uniform standards across regulatory jurisdictions have been a demand of global online gambling operators and GLI-19 is a step in this direction. GLI-19 can be downloaded for free from the GLI and TST web sites.

GLI-19 is separated into two distinct areas: supplier requirements and operator requirements. Maida said, "This separation was suggested by the expert team of regulators, suppliers and operators we consulted with on this project, and will help to streamline the industry." Because of this separation software providers will be able to offer a system that is regulations compliant and this will make it easier for the operators to implement. GLI-19 does not create any new requirements for the online gambling industry. It simply collates the best practices in already existing regulated markets. Therefore it seeks to make things simpler without imposing additional burdens. Another advantage of GLI-19 is that it is an off the shelf solution immediately available to those who need it. It would be continuously updated as and when needed.

The timing of the release of GLI-19 is also significant. The European Commission's Green Paper on regulatory harmonization in the European Union is currently in its consultative phase. The persons involved in finalizing the Green Paper will be able to take inputs from GLI-19. GLI and TST have been leading the world in all types of gaming testing for more than two decades. They were the first to test in several reputed regulated online gambling jurisdictions like Alderney, Isle of Man and the United Kingdom.
