Cryptologic Extends Marvel Deal

In a press release from its headquarters at Dublin, Cryptologic has announced that it has extended its exclusive licensing agreement with Marvel Entertainment Inc. The deal was originally signed in 2005 and has already been extended thrice. The present extension will ensure that the two organizations work together till 2013. Cryptologic is one of the leading online gaming software providers and Marvel Entertainment are the owners of the brands of superheroes whose exploits have been followed through comic books for over half a century.

Since 2005 Cryptologic has developed 17 online slot games based on Marvel Comics superheroes. Some of the superheroes to grace the reels are Spider-Man, the Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Blade, Sub-Mariner and the Punisher. The Hulk and Spider-Man have two games each. These extremely popular slot games have resulted in Cryptologic being one of the most sought after software developers and has recently signed several deals to offer these games on other software platforms. In the coming months and years online casino players can hope to see some new Marvel superheroes appear on the reels and repeat performances from some of the existing superheroes.

Brian Hadfield, Cryptologic's President and CEO, called the association between his company and Marvel Entertainment "daringly different". He said, "It's exciting to extend a deal that has been mutually successful and profitable, and to strengthen Cryptologic's competitive advantage in the branded gaming space. We look forward to working with Marvel to deliver an even more compelling experience for every player, every day." Justin Thouin, Cryptologic's Vice President, echoed these sentiments stating that this partnership was committed to delivering more "blockbuster entertainment".

Simon Philips, President, Worldwide Consumer Products for Marvel Entertainment, also expressed satisfaction at the deal. He said, "They [Cryptologic] have proven they are able to translate Marvel's world renowned Super Heroes into hugely successful Internet casino games and we are confident they will continue to fully leverage these properties on a global level."

In March 2009 another online gaming software provider, Playtech had announced an exclusive deal with Marvel Characters B.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment Inc., to develop online slot games based on Marvel's motion picture brands. Playtech had informed that they will have the right to Marvel film brands such as The Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man and Blade. Clearly Marvel distinguishes between its comic book brands and film brands. What exactly is the difference would be known to online casino players when Playtech's Marvel slot games hit the casinos.
