Bodog Is Slots.com Domain Name BuyerBy: Ryan Alders, Wednesday June 2nd 20101 Comment Email Print The domain name Slots.com does not desist from being in the news. It first came in the news when it was announced that it is up for sale, then it came in the news when it was announced that it was sold for over $5.5 million to a mystery buyer. Now the name of the buyer has been revealed. It is Calvin Ayre, the owner of the Bodog brand. And like everything that Ayre does, this transaction was loaded with pizzazz as well. The news was first released at the Calvin Ayre web site. The report quoted Ayre as saying, "I sat on a bar stool in London's L'Atelier restaurant bidding millions for one of the biggest gaming domains in the world." Search Engine Optimization specialist Bob Rains informed Ayre about the availability of the domain name and helped him with the auction. The actual amount paid was £4 million, which is closer to $5.85 million. Ayre explained the rationale for paying such a large sum for the domain name. He feels that the Internet is the space where the coming generations will exist. Slots.com is the second best gaming domain name in existence. Casino.com is the best. He rates it better than Poker.com. There are several strong online brands that have the word "poker" and this reduces the efficacy of Poker.com for online searches. Slots are more universal than poker, online gaming web sites devote more space to slots and the word is easy to spell and remember. Information from Google reveals that the search for "slots" returns over 35 million entries and there are more than 6 million searches for "slots" every month. The next question is how the Bodog brand will use Slots.com. Ayre has some very clear ideas about this. He intends to use Slots.com at a number of levels. First and immediately Slots.com will divert global traffic to the existing Bodog online gambling web sites, Bodog.com, bodog.co.uk, bodog.ca and bodog88.com. It will also be an umbrella for a number of other targeted web sites "including one that will be created by and for the female gambler." Ultimately Ayre will license Slots.com to selected online gaming operators in exactly the same way the exclusive Bodog brand has been licensed. Apart from online gaming, the Bodog Brand has been licensed to music and entertainment products. Bodog Brand is a venture capital and licensing organization in the Caribbean. Even though it no longer operates the online gaming web sites bearing its brand name, it remains in the thick of the online gaming industry. Recently Bodog Brand matched the donations collected by the rest of the industry for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Wow that's a pretty penny to pay for a domain name. I suppose that there is definitely some value in the domain name however I wouldn't imagine that the value would be as much as what they've paid for it. I personally don't really think that this was the best domain name investment. I think they would have been much better going after casino.com which sold for 1.0M about 5 years back. With 5.5M offer I think that they probably could have picked up the domain even though it's currently run as a casino I beleive that casino.com is only on lease right now.
