5G Networks And GamingBy: Fabian Rictor, Wednesday October 24th 20180 Comments Email Print Usually developments within the online gaming industry drive it to the next level. But sometimes external technology advances can provide the impetus. One such development is in the offing. It is 5G. When online casinos first started the speeds were slower than slow. Small 40 megabyte files took 12 hours to download. There was no question of instant play or mobile gaming. The communication world has moved to 2G, 3G and 4G. This has enabled the play of slots and live dealer games on mobile devices. It is all but certain that 5G will be launched sometime in 2019. The network will probably launch first in Canada. Word has it that Toronto and downtown Vancouver will be the first to get a taste of 5G. 5G will be 20 times faster than 4G. The main advantage will come in non-gaming applications like laying the groundwork for future technologies of self-driving vehicles, smart cities and true smart homes. This is because it will take far less time for wireless information to make a round trip. 5G is based on millimetre wave spectrum. This extremely high frequency allowing for lightning fast data transfer rates comes with one serious drawback. It has a restricting short range. So a large number of millimetre wave antennas will need to be installed. This will require an enormous amount of work across a vast area and an extraordinary investment as well. Hence the 5G mobile network technology will happen in increments, with the focus first being on the most densely populated metro areas, and expanding outwards. The more important and far reaching applications will be first priority for 5G technologists. Casino gaming and other personal activities will take some time coming. But they will come. So what can be expected from 5G mobile gaming? The most obvious application would seem to be live casino games. That is where the maximum data transmission takes place and that is one area that can be said to be wanting. However, the games suppliers will have to come up with completely new applications that are not even ideas now. Virtual reality gaming and augmented reality gaming are on the cusp of commercial exploitation. The wait is for the hardware to get reasonably priced. However, these will result in individual players playing casino games alone. With 5G it could be possible to connect virtual gamers in different remote locations to provide a more immersive experience.
